Sister Sites VancouverART & MontrealART & TorontoART
In 2012 a small group of art supporters founded TorontoART.ca. The idea was to create an online hub to promote artists, galleries and art-service providers in the Toronto area as well as those who identify Toronto as their major art centre. The site was launched in early 2013, and now has over 500 artist and gallery members.
For site visitors, TorontoART is an easy-to-use hub for discovering Toronto art through member profiles (linked to members’ websites), searchable event listings, and resources that make the art world more accessible, such as our artist and gallerist interviews.
Beyond the public side of the site, members also have access to a members-only section that facilitates dialogue and sharing through a resources section and message board.
No ads appear on the site. Instead, TorontoART funds the site through membership fees and private, corporate and philanthropic support. Fees go toward website development and maintenance as well as advertising in major art-related magazines, such as Canadian Art, Border Crossings and Ciel Variable, and a variety of online art-related venues. Beyond print and online advertising, we employ other promotional tools as well as extensive promotion through social media.
Almost from the inception of our first site, artists and galleries in other markets asked when it would expand to include other markets. Instead of expanding the original site, we have elected to work with local players in other markets to launch similar websites that will grow organically based on local needs. At the same time, these sites will stay true to the original ideas: providing members with a valuable promotion tool and visitors an easy-to-use art resource, no advertising appearing on the site, and keeping costs to members to a minimum.
The first of these new sites is VancouverART.info. We have now launched the beta site and welcome galleries, artists and art-service providers to visit www.vancouverart.info as we gear up for an official launch in the near future.
Now with the Vancouver site launched in beta, we are working towards MontrealART.info and its mirror site en français, ARTMontreal.info.
We are working with our Montreal friends in putting together not two separate websites, but one site where all the same content is accessible in two languages, much like entering a room through one of two doors.
While it is still early going, artists, galleries and art-service providers in the Montreal region can pre-register here.
